Grief after bushfires

Extreme weather is a persistent feature of the Australian climate. Each year, families, businesses and communities bear the impact of storms, cyclones, floods, fires and drought. Occasionally, severe disasters result in the loss of lives and property, causing significant loss and grief.

In this podcast, we discuss the particular impact of bushfires on individuals and communities. Led by Prof. Nicholas Procter (Chair, Mental Health Nursing, UniSA) and drawing upon the insights of experienced counsellors Jacob Mangelsdorf and Lee Boulger (Anglicare), the podcast covers:

  • Strategies for talking to children about bushfire experiences
  • Self-care after experiencing a bushfire
  • Common grief reactions, and when to seek support
  • Growing around grief after bushfires
