Solace

Solace: For widowed people.

Solace support and ongoing grief recovery work is conducted by support workers who have been trained in appropriate grief management skills so that they can help other newly bereaved people as they were once helped.

The services of a Professional Advisory Council are also available to Solace. The members of the Council come from a variety of professional fields related to grief. They serve in an honorary capacity and are available for guidance consultation as required.

Solace was founded in Adelaide, South Australia in November 1983. It has since become national and there are currently 46 chapters throughout Australia.

The concept of Solace is a self-help group to provide emotional support for widowed people. Solace provides the opportunity for people to talk or listen in a non-threatening and safe environment to others who have been through the trauma of losing a loved one. Our service provides meetings and telephone support.

It is extremely important to dispel the myth that may exist that Solace is a dating agency. The aim of Solace is to facilitate ‘healthy’ grieving under the guidance of trained support workers all of whom have lost their partner through death.

Solace is transitory. People use its facilities as a springboard to a better understanding of the grieving process and the associated traumas. In the caring and sharing which is the hallmark of Solace, the healing can then begin.

Services provided:

  • Adelaide Solace meetings every Tuesday afternoon 12.30-1.30pm devoted to the newly bereaved and those in need of one to one support followed by group meeting 1.30-3.30pm
  • No appointments necessary
  • Telephone support provides phone numbers for other Australian state/territory support groups
